Thursday morning's new baby chicks

These are the new babies chicks which appeared on Thursday morning.
This mama seems to be more relaxed than some, as she led her babies right through morning feeding. There are actually six of the babies.

One of the chicks has the coloring closest to the mama, the others are a little darker. The babies hatching now, depending upon which mama hen is hatching, are the last we will have from Sergeant Major and Golden Boy.

Here, she led her babies away from me to the plough, then under the buggy to head back to the nest she has made under a trough past the North side of the doe pen.

The best part about new babies of any species is the new promise and possibility of a brand new life. Our Phoenix hens are generally excellent sitters and mamas, who tend closely to their babies and defend them aggressively. I look forward to seeing who these babies become, and watching what comes of the little ones!

Sneaky Chicken!

Sneak post from the farmer's Mama- The front gate blew open.  Someone needs to learn to chain it properly.  As Wyatt headed out the front door to fix it, Jalympics ran in the door to try to nest on the sofa.  It turned into a who is chasing who in the living room!

Had this cute little egg appear in the nesting boxes today!  I would have thought a random wild bird had snuck in to the chicken nesting area, but it was so perfectly shaped and just the right color of green.  Yep, it is what some call a “practice egg”- an egg from a new layer.  Their eggs start small, and increase in size as their laying time goes on.  The new layer- one of the pretty little white Americaunas which hatch last spring.  We had a number of beautiful young ladies

Around here, eggs come in a number of sizes and colors.  From tiny as the hens begin to lay, to extra-large ones which we cannot close the cartons over.  Officially, the standard only recognizes colors in white, brown and tinted, but we see speckles, pinks, and green, blue green and olive.  It all makes for a beautiful egg basket, though the actual nutrition of the egg is determined not by the color of the egg but by the quality of the feed we provide our hens.  (The color is determined by breed and has no effect on nutrition or flavor.)

Nevertheless, any chicken owner can understand the excitement when a hen begins to lay, and the joy of those silly little eggs.  Thought you all might enjoy the photos, and the little joys from here.  Have a great weekend!

Caption this....

See Charlie Brown the goat peeking over the fence of the buck pen at the hens who took over this pen cover?  The mama hen must know he cannot reach her, because she isn't bothered at all by this!  Regardless, we didn't ;et her try to hatch her eggs here!
